Genius Hour 1.4

For this week of whittling, I still seem to be in a slump. The shape of the wood blocks have stopped me from being able to do some of designs I had planned to, and I haven’t gotten around to getting different shaped ones or cutting them. I feel guilt and stress about not progressing with my whittling, and I hope I can get back into it soon. With other school work, college work, and just life getting in the way, sadly whittling hasn’t been my absolute top priority. Im really going to try to change that this week. The one thing I have accomplished however, is painting my gnome that I had whittled awhile ago. So I suppose I’m still on track in that aspect.

    Everyone gets busy sometimes, and whittling seems like a precise and time consuming process to get into here and there. I like how you are willing to admit that you got busy. I hope you are able to get back into it! It would be awesome to see some of your finished pieces.

    Good job on painting the gnome, it's better to get something on track if you can't control the whole project. I hope the final project comes out great because you show pride when talking about it.

    I completely understand the time issues. It is hard when problems with your project come up and then you have to try to plan for more time to work them out. It seems like your projects are turning out well though. I can't wait to see what you do next.

Genius Hour 1.2

Week 2 of whittling has proved to be quite challenging. As I finished up on the details of my gnome, I made the decision to sidetrack for a bit and start a new project. I chose a small baseball bat as my next whittling creation. As simple as the design may be, I knew I would face difficulty with having correct proportions, smooth texture, and even knife strokes on such a small and delicate piece of wood. Beginning the bat was simple enough. I could take large pieces off with the knife and within no time at all, the basic bat shape was starting to form. However, I was soon to run into some issues. As the bat got smaller, I had to be more precise with my cuts in order to not take too much off, which was a worry of mine. Genius Hour 1.5

This week for whittling I have continued on with my little wooden cat. Its proving to be quite difficult, because of its size and angles, but I'm excited to see the outcome. I still haven't figured out my wood block dilemma, but I'm hoping Mr. Kelly can help me out with cutting some of the blocks down to the correct sizes. I have issues asking for help, but in order to keep progressing with my whittling at the pace I want to, I'll need to suck up my pride and utilize other people.
